Home: bring'n home the bacon

literally...
Trying new things has always been a part of what "home" is to me.  Jason cured his own bacon!!!  He's been reading about how to do it and just had to try it.  It was so awesome.   He bought the pork belly from a butcher and created a rub with fresh herbs and special salts.  The process took about 10 days.  I must say that this bacon endeavor was a huge success and we will be repeating. frequently. :)

YUM... blt's, omlets, salads w fresh bacon, sandwiches, soup toppings, and more.

My parents always told us when we wanted to make something that "you can do whatever you want to do as long as you clean up the mess!"  And then they supplied us with EVERYTHING- scraps of lumber and other building materials and tools (my dad is a general contractor), fabric, paint, and all things crafty (my mom was Martha Stewart BEFORE there was an Everyday Living empire) and free reign of the kitchen.  There were many many crazy concoctions in the kitchen, lots of ugly paintings hanging around our home, little wobbly stools and tables and boxes constructed with wood and nails and clothes sewn in funny misshapen ways but there were also priceless lessons taught about ingenuity, creativity, resourcefulness, and imagination.  We never left a store without hearing from my mom, "we could make that!"   I think I could go on and on and on with examples and stories about growing up with this mentality.  I won't do that here, but I want to pass it on to my children.  Please share ways that you try new things in your home.   I'd LOVE to hear!

Sounds like your parents were extrememly wise - and brave! :-) I think it's super fun you decided to make bacon on your own. That would have never occurred to me (mostly b/c I don't like bacon). But maybe I would like it homemade? Anyway, enjoy!

LOVE the idea of the bacon! Did he find a recipe on the internet? If so, could you provide a link?

:-)

That bacon is the BOMB!!!!! How amazingly cool!!! I am sooooo intrigued and am going to really think about trying that....sometime....after the holidays! :)

You know, one of my first and favorite memories of you (and forgive me if I am repeating myself) was walking into your room (2nd floor) and seeing thing after thing of handmade creations on your shelf. I was so amazed and although I have the inward gumption of "I can do that" I so often lack the courage to see it through and get my hands dirty. I didn't do a lot of that stuff growing up and I feel kind of "behind." So, consequently, I totally let the boys dig in and get dirty. One thing I am glad we did was last years Christmas gift to them was a boy sized work bench. John built it for them and accompanied all the necessary pint sized tools and blocks of wood to go with it. They seriously get lost in their work and there is no sweeter thing than to hear the banging going on knowing their imaginations are soaring. AND, you certainly ARE instilling that into your children. That is SO evident!!!! :) Keep sharing.........your stories and memories are so inspiring!

Jason just read about it on a website somewhere and had to improvise with the ingredients and measurements. Sorry. I don't have a link or a "recipe". You MUST try it though! soooo yummy. We just made up a big batch and then have bacon whenever we want it. I've been microwaving it (It's already sliced and cooked and some is frozen and some is in the fridge) and putting it on breakfast sandwiches all week.

Erin N, you're funny with your memory! I LOVED that workbench that you and John created for the boys. I'd love to know how that works. Do you just have lots of random crafting supplies down there for them? Does it have to supervised? What kind of projects and tools do they use? I just love it. That would probably be a dream gift for Jonas. Maybe he'll get his own little toolbox for his bday this year. That's a start!
